An Introduction from Music & PE
My name is Jackie Stokke (Stah- key), and I am so excited to be at Hygiene! This is my seventh year of teaching music, I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Music and a Master’s Degree in Music Education. I am looking forward to working with everyone in music class, we will be working with small percussion instruments, drums, xylophones, ukuleles in 4th and 5th grade, and learning music through singing and playing songs and games! I have two children; Thorsen (3) and Astrid (1) and my husband Parker and I have been married for five years. We have lived in Longmont for the last seven years, and we love it here! I am so excited to be part of the Hygiene community, thank you for your support!

A note from Mrs. Newell:
Welcome back! I am so excited to catch up with your students and get moving with them in PE again. Please remember that we do go outside often. Water bottles are a must as well as comfortable shoes that “hug, cushion and cover the feet”. As you are settling back into routines for the school year, I want to share the following information from Dr. Nilong Vyas; pediatrician and sleep consultant.
From good sleep comes good eaters, readers, and behaviors.
- Create a Bedtime Routine: Establish a calming bedtime routine that helps signal to your child that it’s time to wind down. This could include activities like reading a book, taking a warm bath, or listening to soothing music. Having a checklist for bedtime helps you and your child stay on track.
- Limit Screen Time Before Bed: Reduce exposure to screens (TV, tablets, smartphones) at least an hour before bedtime. The blue light emitted by screens can interfere with the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.
- Monitor Diet and Caffeine Intake: Avoid giving children caffeinated beverages and large meals close to bedtime. Instead, offer a light snack if they’re hungry.
- Encourage Physical Activity: Regular physical activity during the day can help children fall asleep more easily at night. However, avoid vigorous exercise close to bedtime.
- Be Consistent on Weekends: Try to maintain the same bedtime and wake-up time on weekends as well. Large variations can disrupt the body’s internal clock.
- Communicate About Sleep Needs: Talk to your children about the importance of sleep for overall health and well-being, sharing how good sleep hygiene practices can positively impact daily life.
- Be Patient and Persistent: It might take some time for your child to adjust to a new sleep schedule. Be patient and consistent with the routine, and gradually, they will adapt.
“Just as a child needs to be taught to eat, read, or dress themselves – they also need to be taught to sleep.”
